∂AIM Computer and Information Scientists↓Stanford Community∞

Dear Colleagues:

Many of you will recall the discussions in the Artificial
Intelligence community connected with holding the 4th international
AI Conference in the Soviet Union in 1975. In particular, there was
the problem of the attendance at the conference and participation
in a panel of Dr. Alexander Lerner of Moscow. Dr. Lerner had
been fired from his job when he applied to emigrate and was neither
permitted to emigrate nor take part in scientific work. As you
may recall it took a threat of a demonstration at the meeting to
assure Dr. Lerner's participation.

Dr. Lerner's daughter Sofia Levin, also a mathematician,
was permitted to emigrate to Israel, and she is visiting Stanford
on December 6.

There is good evidence to support the belief of the Soviet
dissidents and would-be emigrants that pressure from foreign
scientists has helped them in the past and will help them in
the future. Therefore, we hope that you will be able to join
us at the Stanford Faculty Club at noon on Monday December 6 to
have lunch (no host), to hear about the current situation and what
we can do to help those who are neither permitted to emigrate
nor practice their professions.
